Must-Have Drug Store Products

I love drug stores. I worked at Walgreens for a year after high school and I would sometimes just walk around while sticking price tags up and make mental lists of all of the hair, skin, and makeup products I wanted to buy. Now that I no longer work there, I still spend a decent amount of times wandering the aisles (ask Brian, he HATES how long I spend at drugstores) making mental lists and crying inside that I no longer have access to the employee discount. These are my current favorite drug store products!
  1. St. Ives Even & Bright Face Scrub Pink Lemon and Mandarin Orange
I’ve been a huge fan of St. Ives since middle school, but I always stuck with their classic apricot scrub. When I ran out of the apricot scrub I decided to grab this and OMG. The smell alone makes the entire product worth it. It smells wonderful. I definitely recommend getting this over the store brand Pink Lemon & Mandarin Orange scrub because I think St. Ives mastered the scent and the knockoffs don’t even come close. But aside from the amazing scent, this product is a wonderful exfoliant. It does a great job of getting dry and dead skin off of your face without irritating it and make it red for hours after use. If you’ve used the apricot scrub in the past, this product is everything that one was AND MORE.

2. L’Oreal Paris Blow Dry It Quick Dry Primer Spray
I noticed this product once while wandering aimlessly around Walmart (like I do so often) but it took a few trips back to Walmart before I finally convinced myself to go for it. It’s only around $3 so I figured if it didn’t work I wouldn’t be out too much money. Honestly, I wish I had just bought this one so much sooner. My hair is fairly thick and very long. It takes FOREVER to dry my hair. I can take a shower,  do my makeup, pick out an outfit, get dressed, ponder jewelry decisions, and pick out shoes in the time that it takes me just to dry my hair. That might be a slight exaggeration, but really only slight. My hair takes forever to dry. But this stuff REALLY works. I let my hair dry wrapped up in a towel while I do my makeup and then take it down and comb it out before picking out my clothes. After I’ve combed it straight I spritz a bit of this on just the lengths of my hair, get dressed, eat breakfast, do whatever else I have to do and when I come back to dry my hair it takes less than 5 minutes, which is great for my hair. I do let the product soak in for a bit and I also allow my hair to begin air drying a bit on its own before hitting with the hair dryer, but I still would say that this product honestly cuts drying time in half. If you have issues with thick or long hair taking a long time to blow dry, this is a lifesaver.

3. Elf Lip Exfoliator
I never really experienced chapped or dry lips until this past winter. Suddenly I was relying on chapstick constantly and even then, my lips were often getting cracked and peeling. I love to wear matte lipsticks and if you have dry, cracking lips…matte lipstick looks terrible on you. I had heard some positive things about the Elf lip exfoliator online so I decided to go for it! After all, this product is only a few dollars. It’s brilliant! It has exfoliating beads in it and you just rub it on your lips like regular lipstick and it helps with any peeling on your lips. After I’ve worked the product onto my lips for a bit I wipe it off and apply whatever lip product I want to wear. No more issues with dry flaky lips! Hooray!

4. Rimmel London Super Curler Mascara
I’m a high end mascara kind of gal. I’ve tried so many kinds of drugstore mascaras and I find that they all end up flaking off and leaving little black specks on my under eyes. This one is totally different! I got this as a free sample from a Her Campus event that was put on at my school and I was very skeptical because of my bad luck with drug store mascaras in the past. However, I gave it a chance and it blew my mind. The wand brush is curled and it does a great job of curling your lashes. I noticed that my lashes were curled more and looked longer immediately. It also wears very nicely and I have no flakes or black fall out on my face. I don’t usually use this mascara for lower lashes because it gets a little difficult to use the curled brush sometimes, but for top lashes this is my new go-to. (I found a few Rimmel London coupons and I already bought more just for when mine runs out!)

5. Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream
Nyx lip products are my holy grail lip products. The soft matte lip cream was the first nyx lip product I ever bought and it is currently my goal to own the entire collection. These go on soft and creamy and dry totally matte. They’re all named after cities and my favorites have to be Amsterdam (a beautiful red!), London (the perfect nude color for me), and Prague (a deep pinky purple color that looks gorgeous on every skin tone I’ve ever seen it on). But they’re honestly all so amazing color-wise. They’re not very long lasting and if you drink from a glass you’ll definitely have smudging (but if we’re being honest, most lipsticks do, amirite?) In my opinion, that is the only SMALL downside on an otherwise amazing product.

6. Nyx Butter Gloss
Oh look another nyx lip product! I picked this butter gloss because of the deep purple color. I’m one of those people that goes out and buys an amazing new lip color and comes home only to find I actually already had six other lip colors that are nearly indistinguishable from one another. I like the colors I like and unfortunately I nearly always go for the same ones. This one was DIFFERENT. I don’t go for purple lips so when I saw this color I had to have it. I was also intrigued because it was glossy. Like I said, I’m a big fan of matte lips so the gloss is a lot out of my comfort zone. Once I tried to the gloss I was a little disappointed to find that the color doesn’t match the tube AT ALL but it is actually a much lighter and more wearable color. I’m actually glad it wasn’t that dark purple because I probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to wear it even half as much as I do now. It’s great to wear on it’s own or over lip liner or lipstick. It’s very thick and glossy but it isn’t sticky or heavy on your lips. It’s a great formula and one of my favorite glosses by far.

7. Nyx Butter Lipstick
You’re probably so sick of hearing about nyx lip products, I’M SORRY, so I’ll just make this one quick. The butter lipstick is much more of your classic lipstick style tube but the formula feels so smooth, almost like, just like the name states, butter! It’s smooth and creamy and feels amazing on your lips.

8. Kiss Gel Fantasy Nails
I’m a huge fan of press on nails. I used to buy those fake nails from Claire’s and The Icing when I was younger and they were always way too long and way too in your face for a 6th grader, but that’s probably why I loved them. These drugstore nails are a great price and actually hold up very well. They last much longer than I expected! I hardly ever have time to go and get my nails done, so whenever I can do something fancier than a basic painting at home I’m very excited. They have tons of lengths, shapes, colors, designs, and patterns.

9. Classic Cherry Chapstick
?The taste of her CHERRY CHAPSTICK?… Thanks a lot Katy Perry.
This is just an all around classic. It saves me from chapped lips and it’s a great product to wear on it’s own or to prep your lips before (some) lipstick. I have Chapstick in my purse, in my pocket, on my nightstand, in my makeup organizer, and in my backpack pocket at all times (and somehow I still manage to never have any on hand when I really need it).

10. Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water
I tried this because of the hype. Before this I primarily used Almay makeup removing wipes (and still sometimes do! They’re also great!) but this product blew my mind. You put it on a cotton ball or round and rub it all over your face. Makeup, dirt, and grime clings to it immediately, NO SCRUBBING REQUIRED. It claims that you can use just this and your face will be clean, but I like to wash mine after just to be sure. If I was really wearing a lot of makeup one day I might even use another cotton ball to rub around my eye area after washing again just to make sure I got all the residual mascara and eyeliner off. But overall, yeah, the hype is justified. This one is awesome.

11. Clean and Clear Acne Spot Treatment
HOLY GRAIL DRUG STORE PRODUCT. Put this on a pimple and see it greatly reduced in a few hours. I don’t know what I would do without this product. I use it after toner morning and night and it clears up my skin so much faster than normal. It may not be the best thing to use if you have sensitive skin, but it has never caused any problems for me personally. It contains salicylic acid so it clears your spots up in no time!
